Science and the School to Prison Pipeline
PLEASE NOTE:NEIU students completed this curriculum project as a requirement for Dr. Isaura Pulido’scourse, "Philosophical and Historical Foundations of Public Education 305," and in conjunction with the Chicago Grassroots Curriculum Taskforce. All contents on this website were created solely by us, NEIU students, who were challenged to embrace local liberatory curriculum development from our own disciplines of focus. The curricular frameworks (maps, lesson plan, guides, etc.) represented here are from CGCT, yet the content reflects our own small group work and perspectives. It does not represent a CGCT curriculum and is not classroom-‐tested. We do hope this site assists you in your inquiries into grassroots curriculum development. Please see www.grassrootscurriculum.org for more information on the group we collaborated with. Thank you. Essential Questions: 1) What is the school to prison pipeline? 2) How is science relevant? 3) How can scientific evidence challenge social biases and their connection(s) to the school to prison pipeline? Unit Flow:
Introduction (Day 1)- Students will be given an introduction Quiz on Forensics with self reflective time. Begin to talk about school to prison pipeline and what they think it means. Discussions (Day 2)- Introduce students to the definition of Forensics and how it plays a significant role to the school to prison system. Discuss: -General opinions and concerns from all classes. -Difference between "street" and school crime. -Innocence and guilt. How are these determined within the school? How are they determined outside of the school/in the community? Introduce how forensic science is used in street crime and relate its possible uses to school “crimes”. Introduce the Forensics study curriculum/time frame/final project – ensure that students understand we are trying to relate the final project to issues within the school regarding school to prison pipeline. Forensic Curriculum (Day 3 through end of unit)- Curriculum for Forensic Science Outline Final Project/End Unit – Students will create crime scenes (something that COULD occur in school) for other students to solve and appear in court.
